Adirondack Chairs - Now and Then

                                          by Karen Arbel

An Adirondack chair is commonly used as the primary type of furniture for outdoors settings. In some parts of Canada, Adirondack chairs are called Muskoka chairs. It is a chair that was designed by Thomas Lee in the early 1900s. This idea was established by him when he was on vacation and discovered a chair that can be set at a slant for improved comfortability. He had it tested for his family, and today, it has become a popular choice for patio furniture.

Today's Adirondack chairs are designed with rounded back features and a contoured seat. This setup has been redesigned over the years in order to form other types of furntiture such as gliders and love seats. With the innovative minds of the human race in this 21st century, the Adirondack has been innovated further to include the use of plastic lumber material. Some are even made out of engineered wood instead of normal wood.

Over time, Lee offered this design to a carpenter friend, Harry Burnell, who was then in need of a winter income. Bunnell then realized the chair would be the perfect item to sell for summer residents. Without the concern of Lee, Bunnel received patent number 794,777 in year 1905, thus he gain rights to the design of Adirondack chairs.

Adirondack chairs are now becoming popular for outdoor seating for cafes. This is due to the fact that Adirondack chairs are designed with flat armrests that are highly suitable to have food and beverages on them, thus, Adirondack chairs do not require tables in general.
